Thats where i was bike riding today and saw my very first of 2024,

When I could get Yvonne out we would go to Southport via Tarleton and Hesketh Bank and there where always early lambs(January) bounding about in the fields. Soon be able to get her out of the bungalow and take her to the farm on Golborne Road. Plenty of sheep in the fields so maybe lambs later in the year. I have ordered a WAV (wheelchair access vehicle) but there is a 9-12 month wait for one,I cannot get her into the car

that's totally unacceptable that a family who have worked and contributed all their lives have to wait for something so long to give them precious quality time together , I hope you get one soon Peter,

I used to have a very close friend who was wheelchair bound.

She had been a very active person. She sustained a C5 (I think, pos C3: it's a long time back to remember) spinal injury, when she turned over a racing car in the States.

One of my lasting memories is a photograph of her, rock climbing. She could do the handholds, but no feet support. So there she is handholds on a sheer face on Stanage Edge, with the team hauling stirrup ropes to hold her feet, and ropes also raising the chair behind her.

God, she had some spunk!

(I guess the stirrup ropes were looped through carabiners on her belt: I doubt she could have produced thrust against the stirrups.)

Unfortunately one day a burglar broke in, and when he pushed her chair away from her bed she was helpless and petrified: unable to do anything, as she watched him help himself. What a vile miscreat he be.

Last time I saw her, she and her dad were making arrangements for he to return to live with him. It coincided with my leaving of Manchester at short notice, so we lost touch.

C'est la vie.

There are lots of WAVs out there. But if you need one for your specific needs, you may have to wait for the adaptations to be done. It's not like doing an old van out as a camper.

There are always some for sale at Eccleston Mobility Centre, the lady next door had one from there.

Don't know if they still do it: I've been away for some time now, but there used to be an annual event at Manchester Central, then called G-Mex, of adapted vehicles.

Went a couple of times with person above mentioned.

Was impressive, but as my friend said: pricey kit for those who have had a generous legal settlement, and hence can afford such stuff!

Enhanced rate of pips £284 per month helps out people who need an adapted vehicle.

We will wait for the WAV from Motability. The adaptation does not take a great deal of time it is getting hold of the vehicles that is the problem

Good luck with it all, Peter.

Hope they get a move on and you both get to be out and about again soon.
